Organ and tissue donation in a public hospital of Pernambuco

Authors

Abstract

The goal of this study was to carry out a survey of the frequency of organ or tissuedonation in Hospital Regional do Agreste, Caruaru, Pernambuco, Brazil. This is a descriptive, retrospective study, based on data from 439 medical records which documented donations made in the hospital between January 2011 and December 2014. Donations varied over the period in question and decreased in the last year of the series, remaining always well below the number of potential donors. In addition, tissue donation was far superior to organ donation. The results show that it is essential to create permanent public measures to raise awareness of the importance of this subject among the population.
